Raut: Dissident MPs fear public, in touch with Shiv Sena (UBT)

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday claimed that six dissident Members of Parliament from the party are frightened by public backlash and have maintained contact with the party leadership, even though they failed to attend a crucial party meeting. Raut asserted that these MPs have not formally resigned from the party, despite their absence constituting a violation of the party whip.

Raut's statement on dissident MPs

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Raut said, "Those six MPs are scared of public anger. They are in touch with us. They have not said they have quit Shiv Sena (UBT)." He added that their non-attendance at the party meeting was a clear breach of discipline, but the party is keeping communication channels open. According to Raut, the dissidents are aware that leaving the party would invite strong public disapproval, especially in their constituencies.

Background of the political rift

The six MPs, whose identities have not been officially disclosed, are believed to be part of a faction that has been unhappy with the party's direction under Uddhav Thackeray. Reports suggest they have been in touch with the rival Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. However, Raut downplayed the threat, stating that the party's core supporters remain loyal. He emphasized that the whip issued for the meeting was binding and that any deviation would be dealt with as per party rules.

Impact on party unity

Political analysts view this development as a test of Shiv Sena (UBT)'s cohesion ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra. The party has been struggling to retain its base after the split in 2022, which saw a majority of MLAs siding with Shinde. Raut's remarks suggest that while the dissidents are testing waters, they are wary of facing the electorate's ire. The party is expected to take a final decision on disciplinary action against the MPs in the coming days.
