The Winter Session of Parliament kicked off on Monday, December 1, marking the start of a crucial legislative period for the 18th Lok Sabha and the 269th session of the Rajya Sabha. Lawmakers are set for an intensive schedule of over 15 sittings spread across 19 days, concluding on December 19.

Legislative and Financial Business on the Table

The government has lined up a packed agenda for the session. Several significant bills are slated for discussion and passage, including the Health Security and National Security Cess Bill. Another key piece of legislation expected to be taken up is a bill related to atomic energy, highlighting the government's focus on strategic sectors.

On the financial front, the first batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for the fiscal year 2025-26 will be presented before the Houses. This will be accompanied by the Appropriation Bill, which is necessary to authorize the government to withdraw funds from the Consolidated Fund of India to meet the additional expenditure.

Private Members’ business is scheduled for two Fridays during the session: December 5 and December 19, allowing MPs who are not ministers to introduce bills and resolutions.

Opposition Readies Its Strategy

The opposition parties have indicated they plan to vigorously raise several issues of national and international importance. Key topics they intend to bring to the fore include:

  • The situation regarding India-Pakistan ceasefire and third-party mediation efforts.
  • Matters related to international trade agreements and their impact.
  • India's evolving relations with China and border dynamics.

These subjects are expected to generate heated debates, reflecting the ongoing geopolitical complexities.

Government Assures Cooperation

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has stated that the government is fully prepared for the session and is ready to address all concerns raised by the members. He emphasized that the session provides a vital platform for critical policy discussions that shape the nation's trajectory.

With a mix of crucial legislation, financial approvals, and debates on sensitive policy matters, the Winter Session is poised to be a defining period for the current Lok Sabha, testing both the treasury and opposition benches.
