AICC's Venugopal Levels Serious Allegations Against Election Commission and Kerala Government
AICC general secretary K C Venugopal made explosive allegations on Wednesday, claiming the Election Commission of India is showing clear bias towards the Bharatiya Janata Party in Kerala. Speaking to media in Thrissur, Venugopal pointed to two specific instances that he says demonstrate this partiality.
Alleged Election Commission Bias Towards BJP
Venugopal highlighted the acceptance of BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar's contested nomination at Nemom as the first evidence of bias. According to the AICC leader, this acceptance violates established electoral procedures. "The UDF will approach the Election Commission against the illegal acceptance of Chandrasekhar's nomination papers," Venugopal declared.
The Congress leader explained that under the People's Representation Act, candidates must disclose all asset details when submitting nominations. "Chandrasekhar failed to comply with this mandatory requirement," Venugopal stated. "It is deeply unfortunate that the state president of a national political party is not following the provisions of this important Act."
Venugopal presented a second piece of evidence: the presence of BJP's official seal on communication sent by the chief electoral officer's office to all political parties. According to the Congress leader, this inappropriate use of party symbols on official election communications represents another clear instance of bias.
Corruption Allegations Against LDF Government
Turning his attention to Kerala's ruling coalition, Venugopal accused the LDF government of engaging in what he called "double corruption" related to liquor bar operations. The AICC leader alleged the government extended licenses for approximately 200 liquor bars without proper classification procedures while simultaneously extending working hours for all bars across the state.
"Both these orders were issued on the same day, which raises serious questions about transparency and due process," Venugopal noted. He went further to claim that "crores of rupees were paid as bribes" in connection with these decisions, though he did not provide specific evidence during the media briefing.
Response to Internal Party Comments
When questioned about former KPCC president K Sudhakaran's statement that Ramesh Chennithala would be best suited as chief minister if UDF wins the upcoming assembly elections, Venugopal characterized this as personal opinion. "Congress does not block anyone from expressing opinions," he emphasized, drawing a contrast with what he described as more restrictive approaches elsewhere.
The AICC leader specifically referenced Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, claiming "unlike Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who recently told a member of the audience that he should ask questions at home, we believe in open dialogue." This comment highlighted what Venugopal presented as differing approaches to political discourse between the Congress and ruling parties.
Broader Political Context
These allegations come amid heightened political activity in Kerala as parties prepare for upcoming elections. The charges against both the Election Commission and the state government represent significant escalations in political rhetoric. Venugopal's detailed accusations about nomination procedures and official communications suggest the Congress party plans to make electoral integrity a central campaign issue.
The corruption allegations regarding liquor bar licenses touch on long-standing debates about alcohol regulation in Kerala, where policy decisions around liquor availability have frequently sparked political controversy. By linking these issues to broader concerns about governance transparency, Venugopal appears to be framing multiple criticisms within a single narrative of institutional bias and administrative misconduct.
