Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched a scathing attack on the Congress party over the women's reservation issue on Saturday. Addressing a public rally in Nainital, Dhami accused the Congress of hypocrisy and delaying the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament.
Dhami's Accusations
Dhami said that while the Congress claims to support women's empowerment, it has historically opposed the reservation bill. He recalled that the Congress-led UPA government failed to pass the bill despite being in power for ten years. 'The Congress party is only interested in misleading women. They never wanted to give them their due rights,' Dhami asserted.
BJP's Commitment
The Chief Minister highlighted the Bharatiya Janata Party's commitment to women's reservation, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always worked for the upliftment of women. He cited the passage of the bill in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha under the Modi government as a testament to its dedication.
Dhami also criticized the Congress for opposing the bill in the past and accused them of using the issue for political gains. He urged the public to support the BJP in the upcoming elections to ensure the implementation of the reservation policy.
Reactions from Congress
In response, Congress leaders dismissed Dhami's allegations as baseless and accused the BJP of dividing society on caste and gender lines. They claimed that the BJP's actions do not match its rhetoric on women's empowerment.
The women's reservation bill, which seeks to reserve 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women, has been a contentious issue in Indian politics for decades.
