CM Adityanath Announces Renaming of Moradabad Locality
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday announced the renaming of a locality in Moradabad after a former Congress MLA who played a key role in the Ram temple movement. The decision was made during a public event in the city, where Adityanath highlighted the contributions of the late leader, Khanna, to the Ram Janmabhoomi cause.
Khanna's Role in Ram Janmabhoomi Movement
Speaking about Khanna, Adityanath said that his Guru Mahant Avaidyanath served as the president of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yajna Samiti, which was formed in 1983, while Khanna remained associated with the entire movement as its general secretary. The chief minister emphasized that Khanna's dedication to the temple movement was instrumental in mobilizing support across Uttar Pradesh.
Details of the Renaming
The area to be renamed is located in the heart of Moradabad, a city known for its brass industry. The exact location and new name were not immediately disclosed, but officials confirmed that the renaming would be formalized through a government notification. The move is seen as part of the BJP government's efforts to honor figures associated with the Ram temple movement, which culminated in the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
Political Reactions
The announcement drew mixed reactions. BJP leaders praised the decision, calling it a fitting tribute to a forgotten hero. Congress leaders, however, criticized the move, accusing the BJP of appropriating the legacy of a Congress leader for political gain. Khanna's family expressed gratitude, with his son stating, "We are honored that my father's contributions are being recognized."
Broader Context of Renaming in UP
This is not the first time the Yogi Adityanath government has renamed places after figures linked to the Ram temple movement. In 2024, the government renamed a park in Lucknow after Mahant Avaidyanath. The trend reflects the BJP's focus on highlighting the Ram Janmabhoomi movement's leaders as part of its cultural nationalism agenda.
