In a creative approach to boost voter turnout during the election season, the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation, popularly known as Supplyco, has launched a unique campaign that connects an everyday staple with the democratic process. Ahead of the crucial April 9 Assembly polls, this state-run retailer, in collaboration with the Ernakulam district administration and SVEEP—the Election Commission's Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation program—has rolled out an initiative designed to encourage greater participation from citizens.

'Vote and Enjoy Puttu': The Simple Bargain for Voters

Dubbed 'Vote and Enjoy Puttu', this campaign offers a straightforward bargain to voters: cast your ballot and receive 1 kilogram of Sabari brand puttu flour for just Rs 1. However, there are specific conditions attached to this offer. Voters must visit any of Supplyco's more than 1,600 outlets across Kerala on either April 10 or 11, following the election day.

To avail the discounted puttu flour, individuals must present the indelible ink mark on their finger as proof of having voted. Additionally, they are required to purchase non-subsidized goods worth more than Rs 1,000 from the store. This dual requirement aims to not only promote voting but also support the corporation's sales of non-essential items.

Supplyco's Role and Preparedness for the Campaign

An official from Supplyco explained the corporation's preparedness, stating, "We supply 13 essential items, including pulses and coconut oil, at subsidized rates, while the rest are sold as non-subsidized products. Adequate stock has been arranged to ensure the availability of puttu flour over the two days, April 10 and 11." Supplyco introduced rice flour under its Sabari brand last year at Rs 46 per kilogram, along with four other products, as part of its expansion into staple goods.

The corporation records monthly sales of approximately Rs 200 crore, despite incurring losses of around Rs 15 crore. Its outlets distribute a range of subsidized essentials, including four varieties of rice, sugar, chilli, coriander, and urad dal. For now, the message from Supplyco is simple and direct: vote first, then come home to enjoy puttu.

Parallel Initiatives to Enhance Voter Engagement

In a parallel move to incentivize participation, the Election Commission has launched a special initiative for first-time voters in the April 9 Assembly polls. Under the 'Vote Sweetened Kerala' campaign, Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U Kelkar has arranged for these new voters to be greeted with a sweet incentive—halwa. This initiative aims to encourage greater youth participation and make the voting experience more memorable.

An order in this regard was issued a few days ago, formalizing the distribution of halwa at polling stations. This sweet treat serves as a symbolic gesture to welcome young citizens into the democratic fold.

Uber India Partners for Free Rides to Polling Booths

Adding to the convenience for voters, Uber India has partnered with the Chief Electoral Officer's office to offer free rides for voters in key districts. In Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, voters can use the Uber app to access free rides—across car, auto, and bike options—to their designated polling booths.

The offer allows voters to travel up to 2 kilometers at no cost, with only the additional fare applying beyond this distance. All polling locations have been meticulously mapped within the app, making them easy to find and navigate, thereby reducing barriers to voting.

These combined efforts by Supplyco, the Election Commission, and Uber highlight a multi-faceted approach to enhancing voter turnout in Kerala. By linking everyday items like puttu flour and halwa with electoral participation, and providing logistical support through free rides, authorities aim to make voting more accessible and appealing to a broader audience.
