Sharad Pawar Clarifies NCP Will Not Merge with Congress
Sharad Pawar: No Merger of NCP with Congress

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has categorically stated that his party will not merge with the Congress, putting an end to intense speculation in political circles. The clarification came during a press conference in Mumbai on Thursday, where Pawar addressed rumors that had been circulating for weeks about a possible merger between the two opposition parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Pawar’s Firm Stance on NCP’s Independence

“There is no question of merging the NCP with the Congress. We are an independent party with our own ideology and identity,” Pawar said. He emphasized that while the NCP is part of the opposition alliance, it will maintain its separate political existence. The veteran leader also dismissed claims that any formal discussions had taken place with the Congress leadership regarding a merger.

The speculation gained traction after recent meetings between Pawar and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, as well as former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi. However, Pawar clarified that those meetings were part of routine consultations within the opposition bloc and did not involve any merger talks.

Background of Merger Rumors

Rumors of a possible merger had been fueled by the NCP’s dwindling electoral performance in recent years. In the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, the NCP won 54 seats, down from 62 in 2014. The party’s vote share also declined. Some political analysts suggested that a merger with Congress could help consolidate the opposition vote against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

However, Pawar’s statement makes it clear that the NCP intends to contest future elections independently. He also hinted that the party would field candidates in all 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, though it would coordinate with allies in the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance.

Impact on Maharashtra Politics

Pawar’s clarification is significant for the political landscape in Maharashtra, where the NCP and Congress are part of the MVA along with the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction). The alliance had formed the state government in 2019 but collapsed in June 2022 after Eknath Shinde led a rebellion in the Shiv Sena. Since then, the MVA has been working to rebuild its base.

Political observers say that a merger would have weakened the MVA by reducing the number of distinct parties and potentially alienating regional loyalties. By keeping the NCP separate, Pawar ensures that the party retains its identity, especially among its traditional base in western Maharashtra.

Pawar’s Leadership and Future Plans

At 84, Sharad Pawar remains a towering figure in Indian politics, known for his strategic acumen. He has led the NCP since its formation in 1999 after a split from the Congress. Over the years, the party has been a key player in Maharashtra and national politics.

“The NCP will continue to work for the people of Maharashtra and the country. We are committed to secularism and social justice,” Pawar said. He added that the party would soon announce its strategy for the upcoming elections.

The clarification is likely to put an end to the merger rumors, at least for now. However, political dynamics in Maharashtra remain fluid, with all parties gearing up for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
