Santhal Council Condemns Political Controversy at International Conference

The Santhal Council, a prominent organization representing the Santhal tribes, has strongly condemned the political controversy that emerged between the West Bengal government and the office of President Droupadi Murmu during the 9th International Santhal Conference held in Siliguri on March 7. The council described this incident as unprecedented and deeply unfortunate, calling for widespread condemnation.

President Murmu's Displeasure and Council's Response

Incidentally, President Murmu publicly expressed her dissatisfaction with the administrative arrangements made during her visit to the conference. This led to heightened tensions and sparked a political dispute that the Santhal Council views as detrimental to tribal interests and harmony.

Key Demands for Tribal Development

On Wednesday, the council presented several critical demands to the central government. Firstly, it urged the inclusion of the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) area of Bengal in the 5th Schedule of the Constitution, which would provide enhanced protections and benefits for tribal communities. Secondly, the council demanded the provision of scheduled tribe (ST) status for the tea tribes of Bengal, aiming to secure their rights and recognition.

Additional Advocacy for Tribal Rights

Beyond these primary demands, the outfit has called for the recognized tribal language to be made a means of communication in the judiciary in states with significant ST populations. This move is intended to ensure better access to justice and legal representation for tribal communities. The Santhal Council has raised several other demands as part of its ongoing advocacy for tribal welfare and development.

The council emphasized that such controversies distract from pressing tribal issues and hinder progress toward equitable development. It reiterated its commitment to fighting for the rights and dignity of Santhal and other tribal groups across India.
