Heavy rains continued to pound Uttara Kannada district, resulting in significant inflows into the Supa and Kadri dams. The downpour, which began overnight, also caused a minor landslip on the Chettalli-Madikeri road, disrupting traffic for a short period.
Dam Inflows and Rainfall Intensity
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded an average rainfall of 120 mm in the catchment areas of the Supa dam over the past 24 hours. The dam, located on the Kali River, witnessed an inflow of 15,000 cusecs, raising the water level to 35 feet against the full reservoir level of 40 feet. Similarly, the Kadri dam in Udupi district reported an inflow of 8,000 cusecs, with the water level reaching 28 feet.
According to district officials, the heavy rainfall is attributed to an active monsoon trough over the region. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts, predicting continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.
Landslip Disrupts Traffic
A minor landslip occurred on the Chettalli-Madikeri road in Kodagu district, blocking traffic for nearly two hours. The debris, consisting of mud and small rocks, was cleared by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and local authorities. No casualties or major damage were reported.
Traffic was diverted via alternative routes, and commuters faced delays of up to 30 minutes. The district administration has advised travelers to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel in hilly areas during the alert period.
Impact on Local Communities
In Udupi, overnight rain flooded Kanakadasa Road, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas. The local municipal corporation deployed pumps to drain the water, and traffic was temporarily rerouted. Residents in affected areas were advised to stay indoors.
In Uttara Kannada, the heavy rains have raised concerns about potential flooding in villages near the Supa dam. The district administration has opened control rooms and is monitoring the situation closely. Relief teams have been kept on standby.
Weather Forecast and Precautions
The IMD has forecast more rain across coastal Karnataka over the next few days. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions. The public is urged to follow safety guidelines and report any emergencies to local authorities.
