Sandhu's Vision for Collaborative Governance

In his address, Sandhu emphasized a cooperative approach to governance. "Delhi has also been my karmabhoomi. I studied here, completing my college and university," he said, highlighting his personal connection to the city. He stressed the importance of unity across party lines to tackle urban challenges.

"The elected government and all stakeholders have a responsibility to work for the city's development. We are aware of the challenges, which will keep on increasing. However, there are challenges in other places and around the world as well. It is our responsibility to turn challenges into opportunities," Sandhu stated.

He added, "Everyone, irrespective of party affiliation, must work together to find solutions to various problems of Delhi. We have to strengthen the hands of the government."

Chief Minister Expresses Confidence in New Leadership

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta welcomed Sandhu's appointment, expressing optimism about accelerated development under his leadership. "I welcome the LG and believe that under his leadership, development work in the city will accelerate and we will find solutions to all issues. Delhi government will work according to your direction and under your guidance," she said.

Key Challenges and Responsibilities Ahead

As chairman of the Delhi Development Authority, Sandhu faces the critical task of implementing the Master Plan of Delhi 2041, which has awaited central approval for an extended period. This plan is pivotal for addressing urban infrastructure, housing, and environmental sustainability in the capital.

Sandhu's Distinguished Career and Background

Sandhu brings over three decades of diplomatic experience to the role. His career highlights include:

  • Graduating with a BA from St Stephen's College, Delhi, and an MA in International Relations from JNU.
  • Serving at India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations from 2005 to 2009.
  • Multiple postings at the Indian mission in Washington DC before serving as Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024.
