Rahul Gandhi Applauds 'Mohammad Deepak' for Courageous Stand Against Hate in Kotdwar
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday extended heartfelt praise for Deepak Kumar, a resident of Kotdwar who identified himself as "Mohammad Deepak" while confronting a group of Bajrang Dal members to protect a Muslim shopkeeper. In a significant social media post on X, Gandhi emphasized that Deepak's actions represented a powerful defense of both the Indian tricolour and the Constitution by standing firm against hatred and intimidation.
Gandhi's Powerful Statement on Harmony and Courage
Rahul Gandhi articulated that while millions of Indians carry the ideology of harmony and love in their hearts, fear often clouds their minds. He declared that Deepak has illuminated a path for all citizens through his remarkable bravery. "Those who attempt to spread hate and intimidate society are, in truth, cowards – never fear them," Gandhi asserted. "Deepak has defended our tricolour and our Constitution. He stood firm against hate, protected the weak – there is no greater patriotism than this."
Personal Meeting and Reassurance from Congress Leader
This public commendation followed a personal meeting between "Mohammed Deepak" and Rahul Gandhi at the Congress leader's Delhi residence on Monday. After their discussion, Deepak revealed that Gandhi had provided him with reassurance and support. "Rahul Gandhi ji had called me here today. He spoke to my wife and family, and assured me that what I did was good and that I should not have any fear," Deepak recounted. "He also said that he would travel to Kotdwar and take a membership in my gym."
Deepak further noted that the current situation in Kotdwar has improved compared to earlier tensions. "Rahul ji made me meet Sonia ji as well. I have nothing to do with politics. It is good to know that someone understands that I raised my voice for humanity," he added, highlighting the non-political nature of his intervention.
Background of the Kotdwar Incident
The confrontation originated in January when Bajrang Dal activists staged a protest outside the ‘Baba’ clothing store on Patel Marg, demanding that its 70-year-old owner, Vakil Ahmed, change the shop’s name. Clashes erupted as Deepak, who is a friend of Ahmed’s son, intervened to shield the shopkeeper, prompting immediate police action. Authorities managed to bring the situation under control and subsequently registered three separate First Information Reports (FIRs) in connection with the incidents.
Escalating Tensions and Security Measures
Tensions flared again after a video circulated by the Hindu Raksha Dal showed an individual threatening to march to Kotdwara on February 12 to "teach Deepak a lesson." In response, the local administration significantly stepped up security measures to prevent any further escalation. Additional Superintendent of Police Chandra Mohan Singh issued a stern warning, stating that no one would be permitted to disturb peace in the town and promising strict action against those attempting to incite trouble.
The incident underscores ongoing social tensions in certain regions while highlighting individual acts of courage that transcend communal divides. Deepak Kumar's intervention and Rahul Gandhi's subsequent endorsement have sparked broader conversations about constitutional values, communal harmony, and the role of citizens in upholding democratic principles against forces of hatred.
