Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi Accuses Government of Failing Farmers on MSP Promise
In a significant political development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp critique against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government on Saturday, alleging it has failed to honor commitments made to India's agricultural community. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha claimed the government is prepared to sacrifice the nation's farming sector for its own political and economic interests.
Government Evades Direct Questions on MSP Implementation
Gandhi revealed details through a Facebook post where he shared the written response he received from the Minister of Agriculture to a question he had posed in the lower House of Parliament. The Congress politician had asked a direct question about why the government has not yet implemented the promised statutory Minimum Support Price calculated at C2+50%, a commitment made to farmers back in 2021.
"Instead of providing a straightforward answer, the government merely reiterated its existing MSP policy," Gandhi stated, highlighting what he characterized as deliberate evasion on a critical agricultural issue affecting millions of farmers across the country.
Pressure on States to Discontinue MSP Bonuses
The opposition leader further alleged that the government has admitted to pressuring state governments to discontinue MSP bonuses. According to Gandhi's Hindi-language post, the government attempted to justify this move in the name of 'national priorities' without offering any logical basis for such a decision.
This revelation comes at a time when agricultural distress remains a significant concern in several states, with farmers' organizations continuing to demand better price support mechanisms and protection against market fluctuations.
Concerns About International Trade Agreements
Gandhi raised another critical question regarding potential implications of international trade agreements on domestic agricultural policy. "The trade agreement with the United States speaks of reducing 'non-trade barriers.' Does this imply an intent to undermine the MSP mechanism and government procurement systems?" he questioned.
The Congress leader claimed that the government is avoiding this question as well, suggesting a lack of transparency about how international commitments might affect India's agricultural sovereignty and food security systems.
Commitment to Continue Advocacy for Farmers
The former Congress president made it clear that his party would persist in its advocacy for agricultural communities. "We will continue to raise our voices - both inside and outside Parliament - to defend farmers' rights and protect the Minimum Support Price system," Gandhi asserted in his social media statement.
This declaration signals ongoing political confrontation over agricultural policy, with the Congress positioning itself as the primary defender of farmers' interests against what it portrays as government neglect and broken promises.
The allegations come amid broader debates about agricultural reform, with the government having faced significant farmer protests in recent years over proposed changes to marketing laws. Gandhi's latest intervention suggests the opposition intends to keep agricultural issues at the forefront of political discourse, particularly as they relate to price support mechanisms that directly affect farmer livelihoods across the country.
