Baji Rout was born on October 5, 1926, in Nilakanthapur village, Dhenkanal district, Odisha. At just 12 years old, he was martyred on October 11, 1938, at Nilakanthapur ghat after refusing to ferry British forces across the river. His brave act provided significant momentum to the Garjat movement and strengthened the broader freedom struggle against colonial rule.
In his letter, Pradhan emphasized that Baji Rout's sacrifice represents a unique symbol of patriotism and moral courage. He stated, "Baji Rout is not merely a regional hero of Odisha, but an immortal symbol of youthful patriotism and a national icon for the entire country." This highlights the minister's push to elevate Rout's legacy beyond regional boundaries.

The birth centenary celebrations for Baji Rout officially commenced in Odisha on October 5, 2025, and are scheduled to continue until October 5 of this year.
