PM Modi calls for eco-friendly Ganesh idols

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged citizens to install Ganesh idols made from local soil during the upcoming Ganesh Utsav, warning against the use of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols. Speaking at a public event, Modi emphasized the environmental benefits of using natural materials.

Appeal to avoid Plaster of Paris

“Do not buy Ganesh idols made of Plaster of Paris at all,” said Modi, as reported by the Press Information Bureau. He stressed that PoP idols contain chemicals that pollute water bodies after immersion, harming aquatic life and ecosystems. Modi encouraged people to either make idols at home using clay or purchase those crafted by local potters from natural soil.

Promotion of local artisans

The Prime Minister also highlighted the economic and cultural significance of supporting local artisans. “By using idols made from our own soil, we not only protect the environment but also promote the skills of our potters and craftsmen,” he added. The initiative aligns with the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, which aims to boost indigenous products and reduce reliance on imported or synthetic materials.

Environmental impact of PoP idols

Environmental experts have long raised concerns about PoP idols, which contain gypsum, cement, and toxic paints that do not dissolve easily in water. According to a 2023 study by the Central Pollution Control Board, immersion of PoP idols contributes to a rise in water acidity and heavy metal contamination in rivers and lakes. Modi’s appeal comes ahead of the Ganesh Utsav, which typically sees millions of idols immersed across the country.

Call for public participation

Modi called upon citizens to actively participate in making the festival eco-friendly. “Let us celebrate Ganesh Utsav with devotion and responsibility. Our traditions have always respected nature; we must continue that legacy,” he said. The government has also urged local bodies to set up artificial immersion tanks and promote the use of eco-friendly materials.

Previous initiatives

This is not the first time Modi has advocated for eco-friendly festivals. In 2023, he had appealed for a ‘Green Ganesh’ campaign, leading to a 20% reduction in PoP idol sales in major cities like Mumbai and Pune, according to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. The Prime Minister’s repeated emphasis underscores the need for sustainable practices during religious celebrations.
