PM Modi to Launch Land Deed Distribution for Assam Tea Workers on March 13
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch a historic initiative on March 13, distributing land deeds to thousands of tea workers in Assam, a move that will grant legal land rights to generations who have lived and worked in the state's plantations for over two centuries. This event comes as Assam prepares for upcoming elections, highlighting the political significance of the tea tribes and Adivasis, who constitute about 20% of the state's population and influence nearly 35 of the 126 assembly seats.

These workers, originally brought from villages in the Chotanagpur division of Bihar and Bengal by British planters, have resided in labour lines without formal land ownership. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that PM Modi will personally hand over the first land patta to a designated tea garden worker, with subsequent distributions to be carried out statewide.

In November 2025, the Assam assembly amended the Assam Fixation of Ceiling on Landholdings Act to facilitate the transfer of labour lines to workers, enabling this landmark distribution.
