Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at a major leadership event in the national capital, drew a sharp distinction between the nature of reforms in India's past and those being implemented under his government's tenure.
From Reactionary Reforms to Goal-Oriented Governance
Addressing the audience at the HT Leadership Summit 2025, themed "Transforming Tomorrow," the Prime Minister stated that earlier reforms in the country were largely "reactionary." He explained that such past decisions were often tied to political interests or were emergency measures announced solely to manage a crisis.
In contrast, he emphasized that the current reform agenda is fundamentally different. "However, reforms today are carried out with national goals in mind. We have set targets. Each sector across the country is seeing improvement. Our growth is constant. Our intent is nation first," PM Modi asserted.
Building a Foundation for Future Transformation
The Prime Minister linked the nation's current belief in transformation to the concrete work being done today. He argued that present-day policies and performance are creating the necessary groundwork for a better future.
"Today, as we discuss Transforming Tomorrow here, we must also understand that the belief in transformation that has been created is based on a strong foundation of the work currently being done. Today's reforms and today's performance are paving the way for tomorrow's transformation," he added.
PM Modi stressed that a nation's transformation becomes inevitable when its citizens participate in development without hindrances. He pointed out that India is now progressing by unlocking its "vast and previously unrealised potential," which remained untapped for decades.
"Our Northeast, our villages, our tier two and tier three cities all hold immense potential that could not be utilised in earlier decades. Bharat is now moving forward by tapping this vast and previously unrealised potential," the Prime Minister said.
Space Sector Reforms Cited as Key Example
To illustrate his point about systemic change, PM Modi highlighted the transformation of India's space industry. He noted that the sector was once solely under government control but has been opened up for private sector participation, yielding positive results for the country.
Concluding his address on a note of confidence, the Prime Minister stated that amidst global geopolitical instability, India is emerging in a league of its own and advancing with profound self-assurance. He also paid his respects to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the occasion of Mahaparinirvan Diwas.
