Political Parties Across India Welcome Election Commission's Poll Schedule

Political parties from various states and union territories have extended a warm welcome to the Election Commission of India's announcement of poll dates for Assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory. The elections are scheduled to take place in April, with the counting of votes and declaration of results set for May 4.

Detailed Poll Schedule and Phases Announced

The Election Commission has outlined a structured polling schedule. West Bengal will undergo voting in two distinct phases, commencing on April 23 and concluding on April 29. In contrast, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry are slated for single-phase polling on April 9. Tamil Nadu will also witness a single-phase election, with voting scheduled for April 23. This marks a significant reduction in phases compared to previous elections; notably, West Bengal voted across eight phases and Assam in three phases during the 2021 elections.

The decision to conduct elections in fewer phases in West Bengal and Assam, despite their larger electorates, has been a focal point of discussion among political stakeholders.

West Bengal: A "Civilisational Battle" and Compressed Phases

The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enthusiastically welcomed the EC's move to conduct the state's elections in just two phases. In a statement released on social media platform X, the party framed the upcoming contest as a "civilisational battle" and expressed unwavering confidence in securing victory.

"The countdown to the end of Mahajungle Raj has begun. 50 days to go — 4th May will mark a new dawn for Bengal," the BJP's post declared, directly referencing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. The TMC and the Congress party have also welcomed the two-phase polling schedule for the state.

However, Senior Congress leader Pradip Bhattacharya, while welcoming the decision, voiced concerns regarding voter safety and freedom. "I welcome the Election Commission's move to hold the polls in West Bengal in two phases. But my only concern is that the electors can cast their votes freely and without any fear," Bhattacharya told PTI, recalling instances of voter intimidation in past multi-phase elections.

Tamil Nadu: Confidence and Preparedness from Major Parties

In Tamil Nadu, the announcement of single-phase polling on April 23 was met with approval from all major political factions. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the principal opposition, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), both expressed strong confidence in emerging victorious.

DMK office-bearer Salem Dharanidharan highlighted the party's continuous preparation since Chief Minister M.K. Stalin assumed office, emphasizing governance and public welfare. "The DMK would secure a huge victory in the polls...it will be a sweep; winning more than 200 seats out of the 234," he asserted.

AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan echoed this confidence, stating the party's readiness. "We are ready to face polls even tomorrow and whenever it is held we are going to win," Sathyan said, expressing belief in a major victory for the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance in the state.

Congress Welcomes Streamlined Election Process

Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram publicly welcomed the EC's streamlined approach. "I welcome the announcement that elections will be held in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu in one phase and that elections will be held in West Bengal in two phases. I am glad that the number of phases has been compressed," Chidambaram stated in a social media post, acknowledging the efficiency of the schedule.

The collective response from political parties underscores a broad-based acceptance of the Election Commission's electoral roadmap. As the campaign season intensifies, all eyes will be on these states and the Union Territory, with the political landscape poised for a significant assessment on May 4.
