Opposition Intensifies Pressure for Revocation of Suspended MPs in Parliament

The Opposition has formally urged the government and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to revoke the recent suspension of eight Members of Parliament, which includes seven from the Congress party and one from the CPI(M). These MPs were barred from the House during the initial phase of the Budget session due to allegations of unruly conduct, sparking a significant political confrontation.

Delegation Meets Parliamentary Affairs Minister

A delegation of Opposition leaders met with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday to press for the immediate withdrawal of the suspensions. According to sources within the Congress party, the delegation was comprised of prominent figures such as Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and TMC MP Shatabdi Roy.

During the meeting, Rijiju reportedly assured the leaders that he would take up the matter with Speaker Om Birla, indicating a potential pathway for resolution. However, the issue remained unresolved, leading to further discussions in parliamentary committees.

Business Advisory Committee Addresses the Issue

The suspension issue was raised again during a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee on Friday. Congress Chief Whip K Suresh sought direct intervention from both Speaker Birla and Minister Rijiju, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution to restore parliamentary decorum and ensure the representation of the affected constituencies.

This escalation follows a confrontation between the treasury benches and the Opposition that intensified on February 3, resulting in the suspension of the MPs for the remainder of the Budget session. The suspended MPs include Congress members Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C Kiran Kumar Reddy, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Padole, and Dean Kuriakose, along with CPI(M)'s S Venkatesan.

Protests and Political Implications

Since their suspension, the affected MPs have been staging protests on the steps near the Makar Dwar entrance to Parliament, highlighting their discontent and drawing public attention to the ongoing parliamentary dispute. This situation underscores the deepening rift between the ruling party and the Opposition, with potential implications for legislative proceedings and political stability in the coming sessions.

The Opposition's persistent demands reflect a broader strategy to challenge the government's handling of parliamentary discipline, while the government maintains its stance on upholding order in the House. As discussions continue, the outcome of this issue will likely influence future interactions and cooperation within India's parliamentary framework.
