CM Naidu Elevates Water Conservation to Mission Status with Strict Oversight
In a decisive move to address water security, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has officially directed state officials to treat the Jaladhara–Jalaharati programme as a critical mission. This directive comes with a clear mandate for rigorous monitoring at the mandal level and time-bound execution to comprehensively secure water resources across the entire state of Andhra Pradesh.
Teleconference Review and Implementation Framework
While reviewing detailed conservation plans through a teleconference on Sunday, Chief Minister Naidu emphasized that nodal officers appointed in every mandal must actively drive implementation forward. Urban mandals will also fall under this rigorous supervision framework, with specifically designated officers ensuring accountability and measurable progress at all administrative levels.
In a significant administrative decision, Naidu appointed Annamayya district collector Nishant Kumar as the state-level nodal officer for the Jaladhara initiative. The Chief Minister highlighted that the successful water management model developed and implemented in Annamayya district should serve as a blueprint and be systematically replicated throughout the state.
Challenge-Driven Approach and Infrastructure Focus
Calling for a challenge-driven, results-oriented approach, CM Naidu urged officials to deliver tangible, on-ground outcomes. This includes repairing canals and traditional tanks to prevent seasonal flooding, while simultaneously ensuring all water storage tanks are adequately filled during the monsoon season through meticulous planning and efficient water utilisation strategies.
He issued specific instructions for strengthening drainage systems in the West Godavari region to effectively curb persistent waterlogging issues. Highlighting the broader economic implications, Naidu stated that improved groundwater levels would directly reduce electricity dependence in the agricultural sector. This reduction would ease the state's considerable financial burden, thereby freeing up crucial funds for other vital development programmes.
Inclusion of Traditional Systems and Public Participation
The Chief Minister further directed that temple tanks, known locally as pushkarinis, be formally included in the conservation initiative. Detailed action plans must be developed to preserve these traditional water systems while ensuring they continue to serve contemporary community needs effectively.
Naidu placed strong emphasis on fostering widespread public participation, urging citizens to become active stakeholders in the mission. This community involvement is deemed essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability and success of the water conservation efforts. He called for regular impact assessments and the continuous refinement of strategies based on concrete outcomes and field data.
