Private and deemed-to-be universities in Karnataka collectively hold 25% of the total engineering seats in the state, according to recent data. These institutions have been actively seeking seat increases, particularly in computer science and related streams, for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year.
Current seat distribution and trends
The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) data reveals that out of the total engineering seats across the state, one-quarter are under the purview of private and deemed-to-be universities. Most of these institutions have applied for additional seats in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, and allied fields, reflecting the sustained demand for these disciplines.
Interestingly, despite a general decline in engineering admissions in recent years, private universities are optimistic about filling increased seats, especially in emerging technology domains. The trend indicates a strategic shift towards high-demand specializations.
Impact on students and competition
The concentration of seats in private institutions means higher tuition fees compared to government colleges, potentially limiting access for economically weaker students. However, these universities often offer better infrastructure and industry linkages. The seat increase in CS streams is expected to intensify competition for government quota seats in the same fields.
According to an official from the Karnataka State Higher Education Council, “The demand for computer science seats has remained robust, and private universities are responding by expanding capacity. This aligns with industry needs for skilled graduates in technology.”
Outlook for 2026-27
For the 2026-27 academic year, several private and deemed universities have submitted proposals to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the state government for seat augmentation. The final approval will depend on infrastructure assessments and faculty availability. If granted, the share of private institutions could rise further, reshaping the engineering education landscape in Karnataka.
