Major Arshdeep Singh Gill Honoured with Prestigious Kirti Chakra

In a moment of immense pride for the city of Mohali, Major Arshdeep Singh Gill, a resident of Sector 79, has been awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry honour. The announcement came on the eve of Republic Day, recognising his exceptional bravery during a critical counter-insurgency operation in the Northeast region.

Heroic Actions During Border Operation

Serving with the 1st Battalion of the Assam Rifles, Major Gill led a special patrol along the Indo-Myanmar border in May 2025. The mission aimed to secure workers engaged in border-fencing construction, a vital national security project. According to official reports, the patrol suddenly came under heavy fire from insurgents positioned on higher ground, creating a perilous situation.

Displaying remarkable courage and presence of mind, Major Gill launched a swift counter-ambush. He advanced through dense undergrowth to directly engage the hostile position, braving intense enemy fire. His decisive actions led to the neutralisation of multiple armed insurgents, including one carrying a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. Most importantly, his leadership ensured there were no casualties among his troops, showcasing both tactical brilliance and concern for his soldiers' safety.

Elite Recognition and Personal Background

This year, only two personnel have been selected for the Kirti Chakra, highlighting the exclusivity of this honour. The other recipient is Naib Subedar Doleshwar Subba of the 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces). Major Gill's achievement is particularly noteworthy as a first-generation Army officer.

Commissioned into the Armoured Corps in June 2016 after passing out from the Indian Military Academy, Major Gill is also a Chandigarh University alumnus. Interestingly, before his military career, he represented Punjab in hockey at the National Games between 2006 and 2010, as shared by family members. This multifaceted background adds to the inspiring nature of his story.

A Symbol of Pride and Professionalism

The Kirti Chakra award has brought immense pride to Mohali, serving as a powerful testament to Major Gill's gallantry and professionalism. His actions not only protected national interests but also upheld the highest traditions of the Indian Armed Forces. This recognition underscores the dedication and sacrifice of military personnel who operate in challenging environments to ensure the nation's security.
