Maharashtra Spiritual Leader's Arrest Sparks 'Epstein Files' Comparison by Opposition
Maharashtra 'Epstein Files' Scandal: Spiritual Leader Arrested

Maharashtra Spiritual Leader's Arrest Ignites Political Firestorm with 'Epstein Files' Allegations

The arrest of a self-proclaimed spiritual leader in Maharashtra on charges of sexual assault has erupted into a major political controversy, with the Opposition drawing stark parallels to the infamous 'Epstein files'. Ashok Kharat was apprehended in Nashik following a complaint from a 35-year-old woman, who alleged he sexually abused her over three years from 2022 to 2025 under the pretence of resolving her personal issues.

Viral Videos and Allegations of Systematic Abuse

Central to the scandal are videos allegedly recorded by Kharat, which the Opposition claims number 58 and depict assaults on women. One particularly disturbing video has gone viral, showing Kharat abusing a woman in his office after conducting a fake ritual. Authorities report extracting 56 such clips from his phone during the investigation.

Kharat is accused of a predatory pattern: luring unsuspecting women with intoxicants, sexually assaulting them, and filming the acts without consent. In a related development, one of his office employees faces charges in Shirdi for threatening a woman by leaking her obscene photos and clips.

Political Fallout and High-Profile Connections

The case has intensified scrutiny on Maharashtra's ruling alliance, as Kharat allegedly maintained connections with senior politicians. UBT Sena MP Sanjay Raut launched a scathing attack, stating, "All this is like Jeffrey Epstein files. In fact, it is more horrifying than that. I believe there are some people from BJP and the ruling alliance. If the police has extracted 56 such clips from his phone, then the Maharashtra government will fall."

Photographic evidence shows Kharat with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a 2022 visit to the Shri Shivnika Sansthan Temple, with which Kharat was associated. However, the most intense heat is on NCP leader Rupali Chakankar, chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women and a trustee of the temple trust alongside Kharat.

Controversy Surrounds Women's Commission Chairperson

Public photos and videos show Chakankar in close association with Kharat, including holding an umbrella for him and washing his feet—actions that have drawn severe criticism given her official role. Raut questioned, "What is the job of the chairperson of the Women’s Commission? She is supposed to get justice for women who are facing injustice. But here, she is seen washing feet of a man accused of rape. Ministers are being seen with this man."

Chakankar has defended herself, claiming ignorance of Kharat's activities and asserting that the law should take its course. Meanwhile, fellow NCP leader Rupali Thombre Patil, who is at odds with Chakankar, has demanded her resignation over the association.

Official Response and Legal Proceedings

In response to the escalating situation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case thoroughly. Kharat has been remanded to police custody until March 24 as investigations continue.

The case has not only highlighted alleged sexual crimes but also exposed potential political vulnerabilities, with the Opposition leveraging the 'Epstein files' comparison to question governance and accountability within the state administration.
