Leander Paes Crosses Over to BJP, Exits Trinamool Congress After Brief Stint
In a significant political development, Olympic bronze medallist and multiple Grand Slam doubles champion Leander Paes has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The 52-year-old tennis legend made the switch on Tuesday, departing from the Trinamool Congress after a relatively short association with the party.
A New Chapter of Service After Decades in Sports
At the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Paes framed his political move as embracing a fresh "responsibility" following an illustrious four-decade career in professional sports. "I have played for the country throughout my sporting life, and now I wish to serve the youth and my fellow countrymen," Paes declared. He extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing him with this new opportunity to contribute to the nation.
Strategic Significance for Urban and Youth Outreach
BJP functionaries have positioned Paes' entry into the party as a strategic signal aimed at urban voters and younger demographics. This move is seen as an effort to counter criticism that the BJP's focus is overly narrow on Hindu-centric issues. By welcoming a sports icon with a diverse background, the party aims to broaden its appeal across different community segments.
Junior Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar emphasized Paes' deep connections to Bengal, referring to him as "a son of Bengal." This reference highlights Paes' upbringing in Kolkata and his lineage, which traces back to the renowned 19th-century poet and playwright Michael Madhusudan Dutt. Party insiders anticipate that Paes' profile—being Christian, with Goan roots and a Kolkata upbringing—will significantly enhance the BJP's outreach among non-Hindu communities and the urban middle class.
Background and Induction Process
Speculation about Paes' political shift had been building since he met with BJP national president Nitin Nabin in Kolkata last week. His formal induction was conducted by Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, alongside other senior party leaders. BJP insiders revealed that Paes' relationship with Rijiju dates back to 2019–2021, when Rijiju held the sports portfolio. "We have 74.5 crore youth in our country. It is imperative that we build a future for them," Paes stated, underscoring his commitment to youth-centric initiatives.
Rijiju hailed Paes' entry as a "moment of pride" for the party, describing the tennis star as an iconic figure who has been inspired by the government's proactive efforts to promote sports across the nation.
Previous Political Affiliation and Trinamool's Reaction
Paes had originally joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 and actively campaigned for the party during the Goa assembly elections, as part of Trinamool's expansion strategy that ultimately did not yield the desired results. The reaction from Trinamool Congress functionaries to Paes' departure has been mixed, ranging from guarded responses to pointed remarks.
One Trinamool functionary opted not to comment on the matter, while another highlighted upcoming parliamentary discussions. "The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, will be debated in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Our MP, Saugata Roy, will speak against it. We hope Paes will express his views on this issue, given that Trinamool and the Christian community strongly oppose the bill. Now that he will be campaigning, we expect him to address the anti-conversion statutes in 13 states," the functionary stated.
Mixed Reactions from Sports and Christian Circles
Voices from the sports community and Christian circles have expressed varied opinions on Paes' political transition. Former India Davis Cup captain Jaidip Mukerjea suggested that sportspersons should primarily concentrate on their athletic careers. "Joining a political party just before assembly elections also isn't proper... the timing seems wrong," Mukerjea commented.
Father Gregory Monteiro described the move as unexpected but respected it as a personal choice. He expressed hope that Paes' new political role would ultimately benefit the Christian community and contribute positively to broader societal interests.
