Leander Paes Makes Political Switch from Trinamool to BJP
In a significant political development, Olympic bronze medalist and multiple Grand Slam doubles champion Leander Paes has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move comes less than a month before West Bengal heads to the polls for assembly elections, marking a strategic shift for the tennis legend who had been with the Trinamool Congress since 2021.
A Strategic Move for Urban Outreach
Senior BJP leaders have highlighted that Paes's entry into the party is a deliberate effort to articulate the aspirations of Bengal's urban voters, particularly the younger generation. This is seen as a direct response to criticisms that the BJP primarily focuses on Hindu-centric issues. By welcoming a high-profile sports icon with Christian heritage and deep roots in Kolkata, the party aims to broaden its appeal across diverse communities.
"I have dedicated four decades to representing India in tennis, striving to make my family and nation proud. Now, politics presents a new responsibility, and I am committed to serving the youth and my fellow countrymen," Paes stated during a media address at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing this opportunity.
Background and Political Connections
Paes, 52, had previously met with BJP's national president Nitin Nabin in Kolkata a week prior, sparking speculation about his potential party switch. His political journey includes joining Trinamool Congress in October 2021, where he actively campaigned during the Goa assembly elections the following year.
According to BJP sources, Paes developed a close association with Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju during Rijiju's tenure as sports minister from 2019 to 2021. "The Khelo India Movement was transformative, and Kiren Rijiju's guidance was instrumental. Following that, India secured seven medals at the Tokyo Olympics. With 74.5 crore youth in our nation, building their future is paramount," Paes remarked, emphasizing the importance of sports development.
BJP's Expectations and Community Impact
BJP functionaries are optimistic that Paes, who has a Goan background but generational ties to Kolkata, will enhance the party's outreach to non-Hindu communities and strengthen its presence among the urban elite and middle class. Junior Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar praised Paes as "a son of Bengal," noting his upbringing in Kolkata and lineage as the great-great-grandson of poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt.
"This marks a milestone for BJP in West Bengal. The youth here have grown up watching him play, and his involvement will undoubtedly boost our image and campaign efforts leading up to the 2026 polls," Majumdar added, underscoring the anticipated electoral benefits.
Reactions from Trinamool and Christian Community
Trinamool Congress responded with mixed reactions. One senior party member declined comment, focusing on election priorities, while another highlighted upcoming parliamentary discussions on the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. They expressed hope that Paes would address this issue, given Trinamool and the Christian community's opposition to the bill and related anti-conversion statutes in 13 states.
However, challenges may arise for BJP in leveraging Paes's influence. Shane Calvert, a former Bengal MLA and prominent figure in Kolkata's Christian community, remarked, "While everyone has the democratic right to choose their political affiliation, Leander will need to answer to his conscience, beliefs, family, friends, and well-wishers. The community is largely shocked and saddened by this decision."
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Elections
As BJP banks on Paes to fortify its outreach before the assembly elections, the tennis star's role in inspiring youth and addressing broader societal issues will be closely watched. His transition from sports icon to political figure underscores the evolving dynamics in West Bengal's political landscape, with both parties vying for voter allegiance in a highly competitive environment.
