Kashmir Protests Over Khamenei Killing: Security Tightened for Second Day

Security Restrictions Intensify Across Kashmir Valley as Protests Over Khamenei Killing Enter Second Day

Security measures were significantly tightened on Monday throughout the Kashmir valley as demonstrations protesting the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei rolled into their second consecutive day. The unrest spilled over into several districts of the Jammu region and even drew candlelit mourning ceremonies in Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.

Police Response and Communication Restrictions

Jammu and Kashmir police employed tear gas and conducted lathi charges at multiple flashpoints to disperse crowds. Authorities simultaneously throttled mobile internet speeds across affected areas and sealed off key city centers to prevent large gatherings. In Budgam district, hundreds of women and children participated in marches, vocally shouting slogans against Israel and the United States.

Clashes and Lockdown in Srinagar

Violent clashes erupted along the Srinagar–Gulmarg Road when Shia mourners attempted to advance towards Srinagar. Lal Chowk in Srinagar, which served as the epicenter of protests on Sunday, was completely cordoned off using concertina wire. Police and paramilitary units manned numerous checkpoints, halting vehicles for inspection. Most shops remained shuttered across Srinagar and throughout much of the valley. A senior police officer confirmed that heavy restrictions would continue through Tuesday.

Political Condemnation and Administrative Control

The National Conference political party strongly condemned the security curbs imposed by authorities. It is important to note that law and order in the Union territory currently lies outside the control of the elected government, falling under central administration.

Protests Spread to Jammu Region

Beyond the Kashmir Valley, shutdowns took hold in Kishtwar and Doda districts of the Jammu region. Doda authorities issued official advisories urging public restraint as most shops and businesses remained closed. In Ramban, Shia communities conducted memorial prayers for a second day to honor Khamenei and others killed in recent air strikes. Smaller protest gatherings were also reported from Rajouri and Poonch districts.

Mourning Reaches Chhattisgarh Capital

Far from Jammu and Kashmir, mourning activities reached Raipur in Chhattisgarh. In the Mominpara locality, members of the Shia community—including children—lit candles, offered prayers, and carried posters both hailing Khamenei and denouncing the United States and Israel. Several placards specifically targeted former US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Local police deployed additional personnel as a precautionary measure, with officials confirming the situation remained peaceful throughout.
