Jammu & Kashmir Government Rejects Allegations of Irregularities in Luxury Vehicle Procurement
The Jammu & Kashmir government has firmly denied allegations of irregularities in the procurement of 133 luxury vehicles during the financial year 2024-25. In a written reply presented in the state assembly on Thursday, the government asserted that all purchases made by various departments and public sector undertakings (PSUs) were strictly in accordance with the prescribed norms and guidelines.
Minister's Statement on Procurement Norms
Transport Minister Satish Sharma addressed the assembly, stating, "There has been no deviation from the established procedures." He categorically rejected the charge that these purchases placed an additional burden on the public exchequer, emphasizing the government's commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility.
Admission of Norm Relaxations in Specific Cases
However, Minister Sharma acknowledged that in certain instances, relaxations of the prescribed norms were granted. He explained that these exceptions were made after careful consideration of several critical factors:
- Difficult Terrain: The challenging geographical conditions in parts of Jammu & Kashmir necessitate vehicles capable of handling rough and mountainous roads.
- Operational Requirements: Specific departments have unique operational needs that require specialized or high-performance vehicles to fulfill their duties effectively.
- Nature of Official Duties: The type of work performed by officials in certain roles demands vehicles that ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency during official travel and assignments.
The minister clarified that these relaxations were not arbitrary but were justified by legitimate operational necessities. The government maintains that all procurement activities were conducted within the framework of the rules, with any deviations being properly authorized and documented.
