Garbage Piles Up on Jalandhar Roads as Sanitation Workers Strike
Residents of Jalandhar are facing severe inconvenience as garbage has been left strewn on city roads for the past two days. This situation arises due to a strike by Safai Karamcharis, or sanitation workers, employed by the Municipal Corporation (MC). The protest has halted waste lifting operations across the city, leading to unsanitary conditions and public distress.
Partap Bagh and Fish Market Worst Affected
The areas of Partap Bagh and Fish Market have been particularly hard-hit. Instead of disposing of waste at designated sites, there have been reports of attempts to spread garbage on the roads, exacerbating the problem. This has not only created health hazards but also disrupted daily life for locals.
Key locations such as BMC Chowk, Jyoti Chowk, and Vikaspuri have also seen no waste collection, with trash accumulating rapidly. The strike comes at a critical time when religious festivals like Eid and Navratris are being celebrated, adding to the urgency of resolving the issue.
Demands Behind the Protest
The sanitation workers, led by union general secretary Sunny Sahota, are demanding transparency regarding the employment records of 10 so-called "ghost" helpers. These helpers are allegedly assigned to drivers of automated waste vehicles, but the workers claim they do not exist. They suspect that salaries meant for these non-existent positions are being siphoned off, leading to financial irregularities.
In response, the protesters have threatened to gherao, or surround, the offices of senior MC officials on Monday if their demands are not met. This escalation has put additional pressure on civic authorities to address the grievances promptly.
Official Response and Public Outcry
All councillors have expressed upset over the sanitation workers' actions, particularly the spilling of waste on roads, which they say causes huge inconvenience to the general public. With Ram Navami approaching, Municipal Corporation officials are wary and keen to resolve the strike quickly to prevent further disruption during the festive season.
Balbir Singh Bittu, Senior Deputy Mayor, stated that he is in touch with Mayor Vaneet Dhir regarding the issue. He assured that appropriate action would be taken to resolve it at the earliest, emphasizing the need for a swift solution to restore normalcy.
The strike highlights ongoing challenges in waste management and labor relations within the municipal framework, calling for greater accountability and dialogue to prevent such incidents in the future.
