Imran Khan's Unwavering Defiance in Prison Revealed by Sons

Legendary cricketer-turned-politician and former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has demonstrated remarkable resilience during his nearly three-year incarceration. Despite facing severe health challenges and harsh prison conditions, Khan has maintained that authorities will never break his spirit. In a revealing conversation with former England cricket captain Mike Atherton, Khan's sons Sulaiman Isa and Kasim shared intimate details about their father's unwavering determination.

Health Concerns and Prison Conditions

Imran Khan, currently imprisoned alongside his wife Bushra Bibi at Adiala Jail, has been serving sentences in corruption cases related to a property trust and alleged acquisition of luxury gifts. In December 2024, both received fresh sentences that extended their jail time. Khan has been detained since August 2023 following his removal from office through a parliamentary motion.

Recent health concerns have emerged regarding Khan's vision loss in his right eye. Earlier this week, he was taken for medical treatment and subsequently returned to Adiala Jail. His legal team has disclosed that he has lost approximately 85 percent of vision in his right eye. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has raised serious concerns about the treatment being administered without the presence of his family members or personal physicians.

First Conversation Since January

In their first conversation since January, which lasted approximately 28 minutes, Khan's sons found their father's resolve stronger than ever. "We asked how he is physically, but he's quite dismissive of that stuff," Kasim revealed. "He said, 'I'm doing OK,' and he said his eyesight is getting a little better, so I took that as a positive."

Khan expressed particular concern about his wife's prison conditions, which he described as equally challenging. "He said they know they are never going to break him and he feels that he can handle anything, but when family and other people are involved, it gets tougher," Kasim added.

Meditation and Mental Fortitude

Remarkably, Khan has turned to meditation to maintain his mental strength during incarceration. His son Kasim explained: "He's come so far mentally and spiritually that I think, in his mind, he sees this as a trial he has to go through. I don't think he's affected the way he would have been even, say, ten years ago."

Khan has reportedly developed meditation techniques to cope with difficult conditions, including power blackouts in his cell. "He'd say the first two days were brutal, but after that he just got into this kind of meditative state and learned how to meditate and go inside himself," Kasim noted. "Funnily enough, these torture tactics have taught him how to stay in there for longer."

Allegations of Inhumane Treatment

Imran Khan has made serious allegations regarding his wife's treatment in prison, claiming Bushra Bibi is facing "inhumane treatment" and that authorities are using her to "blackmail" him. In a statement reported by The Independent, Khan declared: "They know they cannot break me, so they turn to my wife. How can they allow this inhumane treatment of Bushra Bibi, simply to blackmail me?"

He further criticized Pakistan's judiciary, stating: "The judges in this country should be ashamed of themselves. Time and again we have gone to the judiciary, but they have sold their souls for personal gain."

Family Separation and Principles

Khan's sons have not seen their father since 2022 and are still awaiting visas to visit Pakistan. Despite the separation and concerns about his safety following a previous assassination attempt, they recognize his unwavering commitment. Sulaiman told Atherton: "I know this is his passion and he has said publicly that he'd rather die in prison than walk away from his principles."

Kasim elaborated on the authorities' approach: "What they fear, I think, is public attention; they just want to keep everything quiet - keep them silently hemmed in and slowly whittle away any kind of strength from the movement. You can see that in their petty tactics when people challenge the conditions Imran is in. They try to silently remove small liberties, like not allowing new books or turning off the power in the cell."

As Imran Khan continues his imprisonment, his story has become one of remarkable resilience against significant adversity, with his family revealing a man who remains steadfast in his convictions despite mounting challenges to his health, freedom, and personal well-being.
