Piyush Goyal Reiterates AIADMK-Led NDA Government Vision for Tamil Nadu
Union Minister and BJP's Tamil Nadu in-charge Piyush Goyal has reaffirmed that if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secures victory in the state, it will result in an AIADMK-led government. In a recent interview, Goyal emphasized that the specific nature of the administration will be determined only after the election results are declared.
Clarifying Government Formation and Alliance Dynamics
Addressing the ongoing debate between AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who insists on an AIADMK government, and BJP leaders advocating for an NDA government, Goyal stated, "I have consistently said we are fighting this election as an AIADMK-led NDA alliance. The nature of the government will be decided after the election." He underscored the BJP's principle of "nation first, party next, self last," highlighting that elections are not merely a means to power for the party.
When questioned about power-sharing negotiations, Goyal described himself as a practical politician. "I know where to fight and how much to demand," he explained, drawing parallels with trade negotiations. He cited examples such as securing market access for textiles from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, and Karur with the European Union, advocating for collaborative development over confrontation.
Alliance Prospects and Political Strategies
Goyal dismissed speculation about potential alliances with actor Vijay, stating, "I have never met or spoken to him, and I see no value in such an alliance." He also expressed confidence that AIADMK would not reach out to Vijay, noting Palaniswami's seasoned political acumen in avoiding risks with figures unlikely to win more than a few seats.
Regarding coordination between AIADMK and BJP on the ground, Goyal described it as "superb," acknowledging minor issues like those raised by AMMK in Krishnagiri but emphasizing that the alliance operates harmoniously, unlike the public quarrels seen in DMK-Congress partnerships.
Addressing State-Centre Relations and Policy Disputes
Goyal criticized Chief Minister M. K. Stalin for framing the 2026 election as "Tamil Nadu versus Delhi," arguing that it should instead focus on collaboration between the Centre and state for development. He pointed out delays in implementing central schemes, such as the allocation of homes and benefits under the PM Kisan scheme, attributing them to the state's confrontational approach.
On the issue of the National Education Policy (NEP), Goyal refuted claims that Hindi is being imposed, stating, "NEP promotes native languages. We want every Tamil family to learn Tamil." He challenged Stalin to clarify his stance on Tamil culture and pride, accusing him of spreading a false narrative.
Seat Allocation and Election Prospects
The rationale behind allocating 27 seats to the BJP was based on an analysis of the 2021 election results, ground strength, and winnability to maximize alliance seats. Goyal expressed 100% confidence in an NDA victory, citing public anger over corruption in sectors like land, sand, liquor, jobs, and contracts, as well as rising drug issues and frustration with one-family rule.
He acknowledged challenges in DMK strongholds but asserted strong campaigning efforts, with results expected to reflect grassroots support. The alliance accommodated sitting MLAs from AIADMK and PMK, respecting each party's strengths.
Internal Party Matters and Symbol Usage
Goyal addressed internal BJP dynamics, including cadre protests over seats like T Nagar and Palani, viewing them as a positive sign of growing confidence and party expansion in Tamil Nadu. He denied any pressure on allies to contest on the BJP's lotus symbol, describing the process as democratic, with some allies choosing it voluntarily.
Regarding the replacement of Annamalai as state president, Goyal dismissed rumors of it being a precondition from AIADMK, attributing it to the BJP's fixed-term policy for posts. He affirmed Annamalai's continued role as a senior leader campaigning across the state.
Impact of Vijay and Other Political Figures
Goyal downplayed the impact of actor Vijay in the election, stating, "Vijay is certainly not disturbing NDA alliance seats." He referenced historical examples like MGR and Jayalalithaa, who had long political careers before becoming chief ministers, and expressed skepticism about Vijay's statements inspiring confidence among voters.
On allegations involving Union Minister L. Murugan and the 'Jana Nayagan' film leak, Goyal criticized the accusers for inconsistency and suggested that producers should file an FIR and pursue forensic investigations for clarity.
