Former Tamil Nadu minister V. Senthil Balaji and his brother failed to appear before the police on Monday in connection with a bribery case involving a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA. The duo had been summoned by the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) for questioning in the case, which alleges that the MLA was offered a bribe to switch sides.
Summons Ignored
According to sources familiar with the matter, Senthil Balaji and his brother did not respond to the summons issued by the CB-CID. The investigating agency had asked them to appear at its office in Chennai for questioning. However, they failed to show up, prompting the police to consider further legal steps.
Sources told Deccan Herald that the police are likely to re-issue summons to the former minister and his brother. The case pertains to allegations that Senthil Balaji, along with others, attempted to bribe TVK MLA K. Selvaperumal to join the ruling DMK. The MLA had reportedly complained to the police about the bribe offer.
Background of the Case
The bribery case came to light in early 2025 when Selvaperumal alleged that he was offered Rs 10 crore to switch allegiance. He claimed that intermediaries, including Senthil Balaji's brother, approached him with the offer. Following the complaint, the CB-CID registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including bribery and criminal conspiracy.
Senthil Balaji, a former minister in the M.K. Stalin-led DMK government, has been embroiled in multiple legal controversies. He was previously arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case related to a cash-for-jobs scam. He is currently out on bail.
Political Reactions
The opposition parties have seized on the development, accusing the DMK government of shielding Senthil Balaji. The AIADMK and the BJP have demanded his immediate arrest and a thorough investigation. TVK leaders have also expressed concern over the alleged bribery attempt, calling it an attack on democratic processes.
The case has added to the political heat in Tamil Nadu, with the DMK facing criticism over corruption allegations. The ruling party has denied any involvement, stating that the matter is sub judice.
The CB-CID is expected to take further action in the coming days, including the possibility of issuing a non-bailable warrant if the accused continue to evade summons.
