Former Rajasthan Health Minister Accuses BJP Government of Crippling Healthcare System
In a scathing critique, former Rajasthan health minister Raghu Sharma has launched a sharp attack on the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led BJP government, alleging that it is deliberately pushing the state's healthcare system into a state of "paralysis." Sharma, addressing a press conference in Jaipur on Thursday, accused the administration of systematically weakening the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS) through severe underfunding and creating unnecessary hurdles for patients seeking medical care.
Personal Experience Highlights Systemic Flaws
Sharma cited his own recent visit to the SMS Hospital for an MRI scan as a glaring example of the system's failures. He claimed that during his visit, he was informed that the patient's photograph would be taken at the Dhanvantari Block, while the MRI facility was located approximately half a kilometre away. "This is like a punishment rather than providing convenience to the patient," Sharma stated emphatically. "There should be transparency, but the convenience of the patient should also be kept in mind." Due to these logistical challenges and an alleged lack of cashless services, Sharma revealed that he ultimately opted to get the MRI done outside the hospital, underscoring broader flaws in the healthcare infrastructure.
Financial Crisis and Underfunding Allegations
The former minister presented detailed financial data to support his claims, asserting that the government is "bent on ending" the RGHS by not allocating sufficient funds. According to Sharma, the allocation for the 2025-26 fiscal year works out to a mere Rs 250 crore per month, or Rs 3,000 crore annually. In stark contrast, he highlighted that monthly bills under the scheme have already escalated to Rs 330 crore, creating a significant deficit. Furthermore, Sharma alleged that a staggering Rs 750 crore from the previous year remains unpaid, pushing the total pending dues to an alarming Rs 1,710 crore. He warned that the scheme cannot function effectively unless these outstanding payments are cleared promptly.
Comparison with Previous Congress Administration
Drawing a sharp comparison between the current BJP government and the previous Congress administration, Sharma praised the latter for its proactive healthcare initiatives. He noted that under the Congress rule, the state witnessed substantial expansion of healthcare infrastructure, the introduction of free medicine and diagnostic tests, and the provision of cashless treatment up to Rs 25 lakh. Additionally, Sharma pointed out that the Congress government had passed the landmark Right to Health law, a move aimed at ensuring accessible and affordable medical care for all citizens. In contrast, he accused the current BJP government of shelving this progressive law by failing to frame the necessary rules, thereby stalling its implementation and further weakening the healthcare framework.
Sharma's allegations have sparked a heated debate over the state of healthcare in Rajasthan, with calls for immediate government intervention to address the funding gaps and operational inefficiencies plaguing the RGHS.
