A final-year engineering student tragically drowned in the Nethravati river on Tuesday evening while spending time with friends near Kallagundi in Kalmanja village, Belthangady taluk. The victim has been identified as Shripoorna, 22, a native of Gokak.
According to sources, eight students from an engineering college in Ujire were swimming in the river and reportedly taking pictures when Shripoorna is suspected to have slipped into the water and drowned. The other students raised an alarm, prompting local residents to rush to the spot.
Members of the Sri Dharmasthala Shaurya Disaster Management Team, along with personnel from fire and emergency services and the Dharmasthala police station, conducted a search operation for over four hours in the river. The body was recovered at 9:30 pm.
Lift Malfunction Traps Occupants in Shivamogga
In a separate incident in Shivamogga, nine people, including two children, were rescued after an elevator broke down due to a technical snag at a mart in Gopala on Monday evening.
Despite no power outage, the elevator suddenly ground to a halt, trapping the occupants inside due to a technical failure. The rescued individuals included seven adults and two children. One woman briefly felt dizzy and exhausted during the ordeal but recovered shortly after the rescue operations and was able to return home safely.
