Electric Bus Breakdown on Railway Tracks Triggers Traffic Chaos in Bengaluru
Commuters traveling on the heavily used Attibele–Anekal road in Bengaluru faced a stressful and disruptive morning on Monday after an electric bus operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) suddenly broke down directly on the railway tracks at the Handenahalli level crossing. The alarming incident unfolded at approximately 10:45 AM, shortly after the railway gate had reopened following the safe passage of a train.
Bus Stranded for Over 15 Minutes, Traffic Grinds to a Halt
The BMTC electric bus became completely immobilized on the railway tracks, remaining stuck in that precarious position for more than fifteen minutes. This unexpected obstruction brought vehicular movement along the busy route to a near standstill. While a catastrophic gridlock was narrowly avoided, traffic slowed to a painful crawl, with vehicles backed up bumper-to-bumper for over a kilometer. Frustrated commuters, many on their way to offices and important appointments, were left stranded and struggling to navigate the unexpected delay. Authorities confirmed that, fortunately, no train movement was scheduled on that particular stretch of track during the time of the incident, averting a potentially dangerous situation.
Technical Glitch Identified as the Root Cause
According to a BMTC official, the bus driver promptly alerted the corporation's technical support team upon the breakdown. A subsequent investigation pinpointed the cause. "It was later found that one of the two switches located near the vehicle's charging unit had been inadvertently turned off. Once this switch was reactivated, the bus successfully restarted," the official explained.
Data from the BMTC's bus tracking system indicated that the vehicle finally resumed its journey at 11:25 AM. Preliminary technical checks revealed that the charging switch had tripped because the upper protective cover was not securely locked in place. The brief but critical stoppage, compounded by the routine closure and reopening of the railway gate for train crossings, directly led to the severe traffic congestion experienced in the area.
Recurring Problem Highlights Need for Infrastructure Upgrade
This episode has once again cast a spotlight on the persistent vulnerability and chronic bottlenecks associated with the Handenahalli railway gate. Traffic routinely builds up at this crossing during train movements, causing daily disruptions. Commuters and local residents have long advocated for the elimination of this level crossing to permanently ease the traffic woes, but authorities have yet to take concrete action on this longstanding proposal. The incident underscores the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to support Bengaluru's growing public transport fleet and ensure smoother commutes for its citizens.
