Election Commission Orders Major Police Reshuffle in West Bengal Ahead of Polls

The Election Commission of India (EC) has taken decisive action just days before the first phase of the West Bengal assembly elections, removing several senior police officers in key districts. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure the electoral process remains free, fair, and peaceful.

Immediate Changes in East Midnapur District

On Sunday, the EC removed the Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) of Haldia and Contai in East Midnapur district. This district, which is considered the political turf of Suvendu Adhikari, is scheduled to vote in the first phase on April 23. The EC directed the state government to implement these changes by 5 pm on April 19, giving them a tight deadline to comply.

New appointments have been made swiftly:

  • Atanu Ghoshal, a West Bengal Police Service officer currently attached to the state police's Special Task Force (STF), has been posted as the new SDPO of Contai.
  • Alok Kumar, a 2023-batch Indian Police Service officer, has been appointed as the new SDPO of Haldia.

Broader Reshuffles Across the State

This action is not isolated. Earlier, on Friday, the EC removed Bidhannagar City Police commissioner Murlidhar Sharma and appointed Tripurari Atharva in his place. Additionally, last week, the Commission carried out significant reshuffles within the Kolkata Police force.

Key changes in Kolkata Police include:

  1. Soma Das Mitra, DIG of CID, has been appointed as joint commissioner (crime).
  2. Sudip Sarkar has taken charge as joint commissioner (headquarters).
  3. Debasmita Das has been posted as joint commissioner (intelligence).

Similar measures were taken earlier in Murshidabad's Beldanga, where SDPO Uttam Garai was removed and Anandajit Hore was appointed as his replacement.

Ensuring Electoral Integrity

Since the announcement of the polls on March 15, the EC has been proactive in transferring around 550 civil and police officers across West Bengal. This extensive reshuffle is aimed at preventing any potential bias or interference, thereby upholding the integrity of the democratic process. The Commission's actions underscore its commitment to conducting elections that are not only transparent but also secure for all voters.

As the state prepares for the upcoming phases, these changes are expected to play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, ensuring that every vote counts without undue influence. The EC continues to monitor the situation closely, ready to take further steps if necessary to safeguard the electoral framework.
