Uttarakhand Chief Minister Seeks Expedited Approval for Kumbh 2027 Projects

In a crucial meeting held in Delhi on Monday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami engaged with Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil to discuss preparations for the upcoming Haridwar Kumbh 2027. The primary agenda was to secure swift approval for projects valued at Rs 408.82 crore under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), aimed at enhancing infrastructure and environmental measures for the mega religious event.

Focus on Ganga Cleanliness and Flow

During the discussions, Dhami emphasized the significance of the Kumbh Mela, scheduled from January to April 2027, which is expected to attract crores of devotees from across India and abroad. He stated, "Ensuring the purity, cleanliness, and uninterrupted flow of the Ganga is our top priority." The chief minister reviewed various projects linked to the Namami Gange initiative, highlighting the need for robust arrangements to manage the massive influx of pilgrims while maintaining ecological balance.

Additional Funding Requests for Flood Protection and Water Supply

Beyond the NMCG proposals, Dhami also requested approval for flood protection works amounting to Rs 253 crore and sought the release of additional funds under the Jal Jeevan Mission. He raised the issue of canal expansion, noting that enhancing the capacity of the Ikbalpur canal system, along with the Kankhal and Jagjeetpur canals, is essential for strengthening irrigation and drinking water supply in the region.

Dhami elaborated, "The proposed expansion will make 665 cusecs of water available for irrigation of unirrigated land, benefiting Bhagwanpur and Laksar areas of Haridwar district. This project would provide irrigation facilities to nearly 13,000 hectares and help address drinking water shortages."

The meeting underscored the state government's proactive approach to securing central support for critical infrastructure ahead of the Haridwar Kumbh 2027, aiming to ensure a seamless and sustainable experience for all participants.
