The Congress party has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apologise for what it describes as the 'sin' of using women to further his political agenda. In a strongly worded statement, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of exploiting women for political gain, thereby undermining their dignity and respect.
Congress Accuses PM of Exploitation
Ramesh stated that the Prime Minister's actions have been a deliberate attempt to use women as tools for his political narrative. He said, 'It is time for the Prime Minister to make amends for the sin of using women to push his political agenda. This is a grave insult to the women of India.'
Demand for Apology
The Congress leader demanded a public apology from Modi, asserting that the government's policies and rhetoric have consistently failed to respect women's rights and dignity. He cited instances where the Prime Minister's speeches and campaigns have objectified women or used them as props for political messaging.
Ramesh also highlighted the government's lack of action on issues such as women's safety, employment, and representation. He argued that instead of empowering women, the administration has been using them to score political points.
Political Reactions
The statement has sparked a political debate, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissing the allegations as baseless. BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli said, 'The Congress party has no moral authority to speak on women's issues given its own track record. The Prime Minister has always worked for the empowerment of women.'
Opposition parties have supported the Congress's demand, calling for a broader discussion on the treatment of women in Indian politics. They have urged the government to take concrete steps to ensure gender equality and respect for women in all spheres.
The controversy comes amid ongoing protests by women's groups across the country, demanding stricter laws against sexual harassment and violence. The Congress's move is seen as an attempt to corner the government on a sensitive issue ahead of upcoming elections.
