As External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar prepares to address Parliament on the escalating situation in West Asia, the Congress party has called for a comprehensive debate during the second part of the Budget session starting Monday. Opposition Strategy Meeting Ahead of Session
Before the parliamentary session commences, a joint opposition meeting will be held in the chamber of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress leader Syed Naseer Hussain confirmed that the gathering will focus on formulating a common strategy regarding the opposition-sponsored resolution for the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
This development follows a crucial parliamentary strategy group meeting at the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday. The meeting addressed multiple national and international issues requiring parliamentary attention.
Criticism of Ministerial Statements
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh expressed concerns about the limitations of ministerial statements in Parliament. In a social media post, Ramesh highlighted that such statements often provide little additional information beyond what is publicly known and do not allow Members of Parliament to seek clarifications or ask questions.
"What the opposition wants is a full-fledged debate," Ramesh emphasized, recalling the spirited 2003 Lok Sabha debate on the US invasion of Iraq during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's premiership, which resulted in a passed resolution condemning the action.
Comprehensive Discussion Agenda
During media interactions after the strategy meeting, Syed Naseer Hussain outlined the opposition's priorities for the upcoming parliamentary session:
