Congress Condemns Modi Government's Reversal on Sonam Wangchuk's Detention

The Congress party has launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led Union Government, accusing it of a complete U-turn after revoking the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA). The opposition party asserted that the government stands fully exposed for arresting Wangchuk on what it termed completely bogus grounds.

Release and Demands for Apology

Sonam Wangchuk, 59, was released from Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday afternoon, following nearly six months of incarceration. His detention was revoked with immediate effect by the Centre, as he had already served nearly half of the stipulated period under the NSA.

In response, Congress general secretary for communications, Jairam Ramesh, demanded that the government apologize not only to Wangchuk and his family but also to the people of Ladakh. He emphasized that the Indian National Congress had condemned the arrest six months ago and now sees the revocation as an admission of fault.

Background of the Detention

Wangchuk was detained on September 26 last year under the stringent NSA, based on an order issued by the Leh district magistrate. This action came just two days after violent protests erupted during an agitation by the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. The protests were advocating for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, resulting in four fatalities.

Call for Release of Other Detainees

Jairam Ramesh further urged the government to immediately release all individuals detained for staging peaceful and democratic protests. He highlighted the importance of upholding human rights and democratic values, criticizing the initial detention as an overreach.

The Congress leader reiterated that the Modi government's reversal on Wangchuk's case exposes its flawed approach to handling dissent and protests. The party continues to press for accountability and justice in this matter, underscoring the broader implications for civil liberties in India.
