Government Dismisses Fake Reports on Siliguri Corridor Union Territory Proposal
The Central government on Saturday categorically denied social media reports suggesting it was considering carving out a Union Territory in the strategically vital Siliguri corridor, also known as the Chicken's Neck. The reports, which claimed districts from West Bengal and Bihar would be taken for this purpose, were labeled as "fake and misleading" by official sources.
Official Clarification from PIB
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) issued a firm statement to counter the viral misinformation. "This claim is fake. There is no such proposal under consideration by the Government of India," the PIB declared. The bureau further urged citizens to always verify information from official sources before sharing it, highlighting the importance of combating the spread of unverified news on digital platforms.
Strategic Importance of the Chicken's Neck Corridor
The Siliguri corridor is a narrow strip of land that serves as the only terrestrial link connecting mainland India to eight northeastern states: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Sikkim. At its narrowest point, it measures approximately 20-22 kilometers in width and 60 kilometers in length.
This geographical chokepoint is not just a transportation route but a critical economic and military lifeline for over 45 million people residing in the northeastern region. Its significance extends to national security, trade, and connectivity, making any discussion about its administrative status highly sensitive.
Political Reactions and Historical Context
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded strongly to the social media posts, framing them as a political conspiracy. "I saw a post that Bengal and Bihar could be partitioned to form a Union Territory. Let them touch Bengal if they have the guts. This is their conspiracy," she stated.
Banerjee referenced the historical creation of Jharkhand from Bihar, suggesting a pattern of division. "They did it once in Bihar, by creating Jharkhand, and now they are trying to do it again," she added, reflecting the deep-seated political tensions surrounding regional boundaries.
Unified Opposition from Political Parties
Despite occasional demands from some regional groups in north Bengal for separate statehood or Union Territory status, there is a broad consensus against such moves among major political factions. The West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress have consistently opposed these demands.
This stance is shared by the Congress and Left parties, as well as the Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has officially opposed any talks regarding the division of Bengal. This cross-party alignment underscores the political sensitivity and regional unity on the issue of territorial integrity.
Broader Implications and Public Awareness
The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation on social media, particularly concerning matters of national importance like territorial administration. It also underscores the geopolitical significance of the Siliguri corridor, which remains a focal point for discussions on regional development and security.
As the government reiterates its commitment to maintaining the current administrative structure, the public is reminded to rely on verified information from official channels to avoid the spread of baseless rumors that can inflame regional sentiments and disrupt social harmony.
