In the Bhowanipur-Sorbhog assembly constituency of Assam, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ranjeet Kumar Dass secured a commanding victory in the 2026 assembly elections. He polled 1,13,069 votes, defeating his nearest rival Manoranjan Talukdar of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) by a margin of 39,152 votes. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) candidate Farhad Ali finished a distant third with just 3,253 votes, as the constituency delivered a decisive mandate in favour of the BJP.

Bhawanipur-Sorbhog is one of the 126 assembly constituencies in Assam, located in the Barpeta district. It is part of the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency covers a rural area of approximately 378 square kilometres, including mouzas such as Bhabanipur, Bijni, and Hastinapur in the Bajali district.
Demographics and Voter Statistics
According to the 2011 census, the constituency has an estimated population of 1,89,000 residents, with 100 per cent rural population. The Scheduled Caste population accounts for 6.56 per cent, while Scheduled Tribes make up 19.95 per cent. As per the 2022 voter lists, the constituency had 1,49,940 electors and 204 polling stations. Voter turnout has historically been high, with 84.47 per cent recorded in the 2021 assembly elections.
Previous Election Results
In the 2021 by-election, BJP's Phanidhar Talukdar won with 64,200 votes (56.41 per cent vote share) and a margin of 25,641 votes over Indian National Congress (INC) candidate Sailendra Nath Das, who received 38,559 votes. In the main 2021 assembly election, AIUDF's Foni Talukdar had won the seat with 55,975 votes, defeating AGP's Ranjit Deka.
Historic Voter Turnout in Assam
The estimated voter turnout in the Bhowanipur-Sorbhog constituency for the 2026 elections was 81.99 per cent till 7 pm, compared to 81.8 per cent in 2021. Across Assam, the 2026 assembly elections recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.9 per cent by the evening of April 9, the highest since the state's first polls in 1951. This surpassed previous highs of 84.67 per cent in 2016 and 82.04 per cent in 2021, with large numbers of people turning out despite rain.
According to Election Department data, women recorded a voter turnout of 86.5 per cent in the 2026 assembly elections, over a percentage point higher than men at 85.3 per cent. This marks the highest-ever female participation in the state.
