BJP Leader Foresees Simultaneous Elections in Telangana Amid 'One Nation, One Election' Push
In a significant political statement, K Laxman, the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party's OBC Morcha and a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, indicated on Monday that Telangana could experience simultaneous assembly and Parliament elections. This move aligns with the Central government's broader initiative to implement 'one nation, one election', aimed at streamlining the electoral process across the country.
Women's Reservation Law Tied to Census and Delimitation
Speaking to the media in Hyderabad, Laxman elaborated on the implementation timeline for the women's reservation law. He emphasized that the enactment of a 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha elections is contingent upon the completion of two critical processes: the national census and constituency delimitation.
According to Laxman, the upcoming national census is expected to be finalized within the next six months. Following this, the delimitation exercise—which involves redrawing electoral boundaries based on updated population data—will commence immediately. He expressed confidence that the entire procedure could be concluded well in advance of the next general elections, ensuring a smooth transition.
Scientific Approach to Census for Enhanced Delimitation
Laxman highlighted that the forthcoming census would adopt a scientific methodology, moving beyond a mere headcount of the population. This advanced approach is designed to provide more accurate and comprehensive data, which will, in turn, facilitate a more efficient and effective delimitation process. By leveraging detailed demographic insights, the government aims to create electoral constituencies that better reflect current population distributions and needs.
The BJP leader's remarks underscore the interconnected nature of electoral reforms, where the success of initiatives like women's reservation and simultaneous elections hinges on meticulous groundwork through census and delimitation. As Telangana prepares for potential electoral changes, these developments are poised to shape the political landscape in the state and beyond.
