BJP Nominates State Chief Manmohan Samal and Re-nominates Sujeet Kumar for Rajya Sabha from Odisha
In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced its candidates for two Rajya Sabha seats from Odisha. The party has nominated its state unit President, Manmohan Samal, and re-nominated the outgoing Rajya Sabha MP, Sujeet Kumar, for the upcoming Upper House elections.
Manmohan Samal: A Veteran Leader with a Rich Political Legacy
Manmohan Samal, aged 66, is a native of Mirhasanpur in the Dhamnagar area of Bhadrak district. He holds a postgraduate degree in law from Fakir Mohan University in Balasore. Samal previously served in the Rajya Sabha from 2000 to 2004, marking his earlier tenure in the Upper House.
Samal took charge as the state BJP President in March 2023, ahead of the concurrent 2024 Lok Sabha and assembly elections. His leadership was instrumental in the BJP achieving its first-ever standalone assembly victory in Odisha. Despite this historic win, Samal himself narrowly lost the election from Chandabali, defeated by BJD's Byomakesh Ray by just 1,916 votes. This loss prevented him from becoming a strong contender for the chief minister's post.
In recognition of his efforts, Samal was retained for a three-year term as state President in July 2024. A prominent OBC face of the party, his nomination was widely anticipated given his pivotal role in the BJP's electoral success.
Samal's Political Journey and Contributions
Samal's political career began during his student days when he was elected President of the Bhadrak College Students' Union in 1979. He later held several roles in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), showcasing his early commitment to public service.
During his earlier stint as state President from 1999 to 2004, the BJP, in alliance with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), formed a government in Odisha for the first time. History repeated in 2024 when the BJP came to power on its own under his leadership, highlighting his strategic acumen.
Samal also served as an MLA from Dhamnagar in 2004 and held the portfolios of revenue and food supplies minister in the BJP-BJD coalition government between 2004 and 2008. His extensive experience in both legislative and executive roles makes him a valuable candidate for the Rajya Sabha.
Sujeet Kumar: A Legal Expert with International Education
Sujeet Kumar, hailing from Kalahandi, is a Supreme Court practitioner who has appeared before various high courts and tribunals. He brings a strong legal and policy background to the party's representation in Parliament.
Kumar holds an MBA from Saïd Business School at Oxford University and a master's degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School. His international education and expertise in policy matters are expected to enhance the BJP's legislative capabilities.
Notably, Sujeet Kumar resigned as a BJD Rajya Sabha MP before re-entering the Upper House as a BJP nominee in December 2024. His re-nomination ensures continuity and leverages his existing experience in the Rajya Sabha.
Election Dynamics and Regional Balance
With the BJP's strength of 79 MLAs in Odisha, the election of both candidates is almost certain, as each requires only 30 first-preference votes. The party has also maintained regional balance by nominating Samal from coastal Odisha and Sujeet Kumar from western Odisha, ensuring broad representation across the state.
Four Rajya Sabha seats from Odisha are among 37 across the country going to polls on March 16. In response, the BJD has nominated Santrupt Misra as its candidate, and Datteswar Hota as a "common candidate" with Congress's support, setting the stage for a competitive election.
The BJP's nominations reflect a strategic move to consolidate its political gains in Odisha, leveraging experienced leaders to strengthen its presence in the Upper House. As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on these developments shaping Odisha's political landscape.
