Delhi BJP Councillor Apologizes After Viral Video Shows Her Threatening African Coach
BJP councillor apologizes for threatening African national over Hindi

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillor in Delhi has issued a public apology after a video showing her threatening an African national for not knowing Hindi sparked widespread backlash. The incident, which occurred in a municipal park, led to her being summoned by the party's top leadership in the capital.

Viral Video and Party Summons

The controversy erupted when a video clip featuring Renu Chaudhary, the BJP councillor from Patparganj in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), went viral on social media. The video, which she had also shared on her Instagram account, showed her confronting a football coach of African origin at Lovely Park in Mayur Vihar.

In the clip, Chaudhary is heard warning the coach that action would be taken against him if he failed to learn Hindi within a month. The coach, who has been training underprivileged children at the park for years, became the target of her ire. Following the video drawing the attention of the BJP's high command, Chaudhary was summoned by the Delhi unit of the party.

Party sources confirmed to The Indian Express that she was asked to appear before Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva at 2 pm on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, to explain her conduct.

Apology and Damage Control

After the meeting with the party leadership, Renu Chaudhary posted a video apology on her Instagram account. She stated that she did not intend to hurt anyone and expressed regret for her behaviour and tone. "MCD parks are for children to play and receive coaching. We will provide all necessary facilities. I apologise for my behaviour and tone," she said.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva addressed the media after the meeting, criticizing the councillor's manner of speaking. "The councillor's way of speaking was not correct. Sports is something that connects children and the nation, and it has no language," Sachdeva said. He added that the party conveyed this to her, leading to her apology, and that their focus would now shift to improving facilities at the park.

Supporters' Defence and Underlying Tensions

Despite the apology, the incident revealed deeper tensions. Even as the party attempted damage control, several of Chaudhary's supporters posted videos on Instagram defending her core argument that those living in India must learn Hindi. Notably, the councillor reposted many of these supportive clips.

In her initial defence, Chaudhary had claimed the coach was conducting commercial activities in the park without permission and that MCD staff faced communication issues. She asserted she had even offered to pay for his Hindi tuition.

However, local accounts contradicted this narrative. A tea vendor near the park, speaking anonymously, revealed that the coach had been training children from the area for over 15 years. The vendor added that the coach had stopped coming after the video went viral due to repeated police visits. Locals also pointed out that the park, recently transferred from the DDA to the MCD, lacks basic sports infrastructure.

Party insiders disclosed that Chaudhary was given a "first and last warning" due to what they described as her habitual offensive conduct. During the meeting, she also alleged receiving complaints about drug-related activities in the park, though no official details were provided.

Background and Past Conduct

Renu Chaudhary is a first-time MCD councillor, elected in the 2022 municipal polls. She was previously associated with the party's Mahila Morcha and has become one of the Delhi BJP's most visible faces on social media, boasting over 3.6 lakh Instagram followers. Public records show she passed Class 10 through the UP State Open School in 2018.

This is not the first time Chaudhary's confrontational style has drawn attention. Following the latest controversy, several older clips of her have resurfaced online:

  • In a clip from March 9, she is heard directing officials to act against a tea vendor for littering in an MCD park.
  • Other videos show her warning contractors over delayed projects and urging meat shop owners to shut during Navratri.
  • In a video dated December 5, she threatened a contractor and MCD official over a delayed road project.

At MCD's monthly House meetings, she has frequently cited her viral social media reels, using them to accuse civic body workers of negligence. The recent incident has put a spotlight on her methods and the party's response to maintaining decorum among its public representatives.
