Anna Hazare Calls for Universal Acceptance of Court's Kejriwal Acquittal in Excise Policy Case

Social activist Anna Hazare on Friday asserted that the court's decision to acquit former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in a case related to the excise policy must be accepted by all. Speaking to reporters at his hometown Ralegansiddhi in Ahilyanagar, Hazare stressed that the judiciary represents the highest institution in the country, and its verdicts deserve unwavering respect from every citizen and political entity.

Past Criticisms Were Made Without Judicial Backing, Says Hazare

Hazare clarified that his previous critical statements about Kejriwal were issued before the judiciary delivered its official verdict. "Whatever I said about him in the past was before the judiciary delivered its verdict. Those remarks were made without the backing of any judicial order," Hazare explained. He emphasized that now that the judiciary has passed its formal order, it is imperative for everyone to accept it without reservation.

The 88-year-old activist noted that had there been any judicial ruling in Kejriwal's favor earlier, he would not have made those critical statements. Hazare had previously criticized Kejriwal and his government over the liquor policy, alleging that it encouraged alcohol consumption. In a 2022 letter to Kejriwal, Hazare even mentioned that Kejriwal was "intoxicated by power," highlighting the depth of his concerns at the time.

Hazare Acknowledges Kejriwal's Social Work and Personal Connection

Despite past disagreements, Hazare recognized Kejriwal as a social worker and his former colleague. He recalled that Kejriwal worked alongside him during the historic protest against corruption, and they share a personal relationship rooted in those efforts. "I would advise him to keep doing good things for the society and country, and not think much about himself or the party," Hazare stated, offering guidance for Kejriwal's future endeavors.

Hazare's comments underscore a broader principle of respecting judicial independence and the rule of law in India. By calling for acceptance of the court's decision, he reinforces the importance of upholding the judiciary's authority, regardless of personal or political differences. This stance aligns with his long-standing advocacy for transparency and accountability in governance.

The acquittal of Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case has been a significant development, and Hazare's remarks add a voice of reason and respect for legal processes. His emphasis on moving forward and focusing on societal good rather than partisan interests serves as a reminder of the values that underpin democratic institutions.
