Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday declared that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will never break, as his government comfortably won a trust motion in a special session of the state assembly. The motion was moved by Mann himself to prove the government's majority amid opposition allegations of instability.
Trust Motion Victory
The trust motion was passed with 92 votes in favor and 12 against, with the ruling AAP enjoying a clear majority in the 117-member house. The opposition, comprising the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had been demanding a floor test to expose what they claimed was a weakening government.
Speaking after the victory, Mann said, "AAP will never break. We are united and committed to the development of Punjab." He accused the opposition of spreading false narratives and trying to destabilize the government.
Opposition's Stance
The opposition parties, however, dismissed the trust motion as a political stunt. Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa said the government was insecure and needed to prove its majority despite having a comfortable number of seats. SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia alleged that the AAP government had lost the moral right to govern due to its failures on law and order and the economy.
The special session was called after a series of political developments, including the resignation of two AAP MLAs and speculations of a possible no-confidence motion. The government's decisive win in the trust motion is expected to put an end to these speculations for now.
Government's Agenda
During the session, the government also tabled a resolution condemning the central government's policies on various issues, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the handling of the farmers' protests. Mann reiterated his government's commitment to the welfare of farmers, youth, and the underprivileged.
The chief minister also announced that the government would soon launch new schemes for employment generation and industrial development. He said the trust motion victory would strengthen the government's resolve to work for the people of Punjab.
The special session concluded with the passage of the trust motion, and the house was adjourned sine die. Political analysts believe that the motion has temporarily silenced the opposition's calls for a floor test, but the political landscape in Punjab remains volatile.
