The accident occurred late Tuesday evening on the Ayodhya-Azamgarh highway near the Katra Bazar area.

According to police officials, the sequence of events began when two motorcycles collided head-on, throwing the riders onto the road. Moments later, a speeding car coming from the opposite direction lost control and plowed into the crowd of bystanders who had gathered to help the injured bikers. The car ran over several people before coming to a halt.

Local residents rushed the injured to the Community Health Center in Tanda, where doctors declared eight people dead. The deceased include five men and three women, all residents of nearby villages. The injured have been referred to a higher medical facility in Faizabad for specialized treatment.

Police Action

Senior police and administrative officials reached the spot soon after the incident. The driver of the car, identified as Ravi Kumar, a resident of Ayodhya, has been arrested. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle has been seized for further forensic examination.

District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police visited the accident site and assured strict action against the guilty. They announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene. "The car was speeding and didn't stop even after hitting people. It dragged some bodies for several meters," said a local shopkeeper. Another witness stated that the bikers were locals returning from a nearby market.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to provide all necessary assistance to the affected families. He instructed the police to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that the guilty are punished.
