Fatal Quarry Accident Claims Seven Lives in Tavarekere
Seven workers were killed on July 2, 2026, when a massive boulder being moved from the top of a quarry in Tavarekere, near Bengaluru, suddenly slipped and crashed onto them. The incident occurred as a tractor was attempting to relocate the rock, which gave way unexpectedly, trapping the workers beneath.
Details of the Incident
According to local authorities, the accident took place at around 5:30 AM at a stone quarry in Tavarekere, approximately 30 kilometers from Bengaluru city center. The workers were part of a team engaged in clearing large boulders from the quarry face. A tractor was used to shift a particularly large rock, but the boulder lost its grip and rolled down the slope, crushing the workers who were below.
Rescue teams arrived promptly, but all seven workers were declared dead at the scene. Their bodies were extricated from the debris and sent for post-mortem examination. The deceased were identified as daily wage laborers from nearby villages.
Impact and Aftermath
The quarry has been temporarily closed pending an investigation. Senior police and revenue officials visited the site. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered, and authorities are probing whether safety protocols were followed.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives. A thorough investigation will be conducted, and strict action will be taken against those responsible for any negligence," said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in unorganized mining sectors. Local residents have demanded compensation for the families of the deceased.
