Belagavi Police Nab Three YouTubers in Covert Camera Blackmail Case
In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the community, Belagavi city police have apprehended three individuals, identified as YouTubers, for their alleged involvement in a sophisticated blackmail scheme targeting a woman government officer. The accused are accused of surreptitiously installing hidden cameras within the officer's residence to record her private moments and subsequently demanding a hefty ransom of Rs 50 lakh under the threat of public exposure.
Details of the Arrest and Accused
The arrested individuals have been named as Sameer Nisar Ahmed Sheikh, aged 32, Abdul Nazeer Ahmed Makanadar, 51, and Mohammed Dilawar Balekundri, 43, all hailing from Gokak taluk. According to police reports, the trio allegedly gained unauthorized entry into the officer's home with the assistance of her domestic helper while she was away. They are said to have strategically placed concealed cameras inside bulb holders, allowing them to monitor the premises from a distance.
Modus Operandi and Police Action
Utilizing the illicitly obtained footage, the accused purportedly contacted the officer, threatening to disseminate the recordings on social media platforms and make them public unless she complied with their monetary demands. In response, the victim approached the Malmaruti police station, prompting the formation of a special investigative team. Under the leadership of Inspector BR Gaddekar and the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Santosh Satyanaik, the suspects were taken into custody on Wednesday evening.
During the arrest, law enforcement officials seized a range of incriminating evidence, including a car, six hidden camera holders, three mobile phones, eight memory cards, pen drives, and memory card readers. A formal case has been registered at the Malmaruti police station under Sections 308(2), 77, and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as Sections 66(E), 67, and 67(A) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Advisory
City Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase addressed the media on Thursday, indicating that the investigation is far from over. "We suspect more individuals may be involved in this racket," he stated. "The recovered mobile phones are currently undergoing forensic analysis, and further legal action will be initiated based on the findings." Commissioner Borase also issued a cautionary note to the public, emphasizing the importance of vigilance. He advised against leaving house keys in easily accessible locations near doors and urged people, particularly women, to remain alert for hidden cameras in public spaces and hotel accommodations.
