Woman stabs constable's wife, son to death in Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR: A routine morning turned into a tragedy in Chhattisgarh's Durg district when a 25-year-old woman allegedly broke into a police constable's house and stabbed his wife and nine-year-old son to death, leaving two daughters critically injured. The brutal attack has sent shockwaves through the STF colony.

The incident occurred around 8 am in the Supela region, when STF constable Lalitesh Yadav had gone to the railway station for a reservation. At home were his wife Reena Yadav, their son, and two daughters.

Police said the accused, identified as Sarojini Bhardwaj, entered the house armed with a knife and launched a sudden attack. The child, who was asleep, was stabbed multiple times. When Reena tried to shield her children, she was repeatedly attacked, sustaining around 18 stab wounds, while the boy suffered over a dozen injuries. Both later succumbed during treatment.

In a desperate attempt to save her daughters, Reena clutched the attacker's legs, urging the girls to run. One daughter managed to escape and alert neighbors, while another locked herself inside a bathroom to survive the assault.

Neighbors rushed in after hearing screams, overpowered the accused, and snatched the blood-stained knife before informing police. The injured girls were rushed to the hospital and remain under treatment.

Investigators said the accused had visited the house a day earlier but was sent away by the constable. Preliminary findings suggest she had been in contact with Lalitesh Yadav through social media, and a relationship issue is being probed as a possible motive.

Police said the woman, a native of Janjgir who was living in rented accommodation in Durg, appeared to have chosen the timing deliberately, knowing the constable would not be at home.

Bhilai CSP Satyaprakash Tiwari said a case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered based on statements of locals and the family. “The accused is in custody and is being interrogated. All angles, including personal dispute, are under investigation,” he said.

Forensic teams have examined the crime scene, while police are scanning CCTV footage and digital evidence to piece together the sequence of events.

The attack has triggered fear and outrage in the STF colony, raising questions over safety even in secured residential zones. As investigators dig deeper, the focus remains on establishing the exact motive behind the chilling crime that wiped out a family within minutes.
