Pune Woman Held for Allegedly Murdering Son, Attacking Daughter After Marital Dispute
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through Pune, a 29-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly murdering her 11-year-old son by slitting his throat and attacking her 13-year-old daughter with a sharp weapon at their rented residence in the Wagholi area.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The police investigation reveals that the incident occurred on Tuesday morning at the family's rented apartment in the Pathan Heights building on Baif Road in Wagholi. According to authorities, the woman, identified as Soni Santosh Jaybhay (29), allegedly attacked her children following a heated argument with her husband, Santosh Jaybhay, over his persistent alcohol addiction.
The deceased boy has been identified as Sairaj Santosh Jaybhay, while his injured sister is Dhanashree. Police officials stated that Soni used a sharp weapon to slit her son's throat and attempted to attack her daughter in a similar manner. However, the daughter managed to escape and seek help from neighbors.
Background of the Family and Investigation Findings
The family originally hails from Kandhar taluka in Nanded and had moved to their current rented accommodation in Wagholi just about eight days prior to the tragic event. Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar of the Lonikand police station, who is currently overseeing the Wagholi police station, provided crucial insights into the case.
Our investigation suggests that Soni's husband Santosh Jaybhay works as an earthmover operator and struggles with alcoholism, said Inspector Kumbhar. Because of his addiction, the couple frequently engaged in arguments, which led to their previous landlord asking them to vacate their earlier residence. The husband reportedly neglected his family and children, causing significant distress to Soni.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
The police detailed the events that unfolded on the fateful day:
- On the night of January 26, Santosh returned home in an inebriated state and had a violent altercation with Soni.
- Early Tuesday morning, around 9 am, another fight erupted between the couple, after which Santosh left the house.
- Minutes later, neighbors from the Pathan family heard Dhanashree's screams and rushed to the Jaybhay apartment.
- Upon arrival, they discovered Sairaj lying in a pool of blood with his throat slit, while Dhanashree had also been slashed on the throat.
- The neighbors immediately informed the police, and both children were rushed to a nearby hospital.
- Unfortunately, doctors pronounced Sairaj dead upon arrival, while Dhanashree, critically injured, is receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police Statements and Further Investigation
Inspector Kumbhar further elaborated on the motive and aftermath of the incident. Probe has revealed that Soni intended to end her own life after attacking her children, he stated. However, she was unable to take the extreme step when neighbors intervened upon hearing her daughter's screams.
